Urgent Action Required Against Domestic Violence and Child Vulnerability
The horrific murder of a five-year-old child at Oshifo village in the Ruacana Constituency, Omusati Region, has shocked the nation. That a father stands accused of taking the life of his defenseless child while left in his care is a tragic reminder of the severe crisis of domestic violence in Namibia.
This heartbreaking loss is not an isolated incident; it reflects a systemic failure to protect our most vulnerable citizens. As a society, we cannot allow gender-based violence or the senseless killing of children to become normalised. Every Namibian child deserves to grow up in a secure environment, free from fear and harm.
While law enforcement has apprehended the suspect, justice must be swift, decisive, and uncompromising. The IPC calls on the Ministry of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare to take immediate action:
Expand grassroots social work interventions, family counselling, and community support in rural areas.
Strengthen regional child welfare infrastructure and community watchdog systems to identify households at risk before tragedy strikes.
Ensure courts enforce maximum penalties for violent crimes against children.
We extend our deepest condolences to the grieving family and community.
