Standing for Justice: Why Namibia Must Answer the Appeal from Mozambique's Opposition
The Independent Patriots for Change has received an urgent legal and human rights appeal from Mr Venâncio Mondlane, leader of the opposition in Mozambique, detailing a devastating chronology of political violence, disputed elections, and unanswered inquiries stretching from late 2024 through mid-2026. While international organisations have documented parts of this record, the systemic silence following these events is what turns isolated tragedies into an unchecked pattern.
Too often, the international community looks at a neighboring country and sees only a lucrative energy frontier, allowing commercial interests and investor confidence to bury political accountability. As Namibia approaches its own first oil production in 2029, we understand better than anyone the dangerous reality of resource wealth buying a government immunity from scrutiny. A market trader in Quelimane does not experience energy frontiers; she experiences whether it is safe to participate in civic life.
Namibia's hard-won freedom was secured because other African nations refused to treat our historic suffering as a purely internal affair. We cannot enjoy the moral benefit of that foundational principle while declining to extend it to our neighbors. The IPC fully supports calls for permanent independent human rights monitoring, independent investigative missions, and accountability for the lives lost. We call on the Namibian Government to officially receive this appeal and raise it decisively at the SADC Organ and the African Union.
