According to a recent report, residents in the Windhoek informal settlements litter 40 tonnes of poo per day in dry riverbeds and behind their dwellings. The faeces and solid waste are uncollected and do not go through a sewer system as these services do not reach the masses. According to the report the growing unhygienic conditions in the informal settlements puts Namibian amongst the most unhygienic countries on the African continent, almost at the same level as Niger and Somalia. As a result, the residents of these informal settlements are daily faced with managing human waste, children constantly play in river beds overflowing with untreated sewerage, exposed to diseases such as Hepatitis B and Cholera. These deplorable conditions are inhumane as the residents have no toilets and often use nearby bushes to relief themselves, often use plastic bags during the night when nature calls as it is unsafe to go out at night and then have to dispose of the excrements in the morning. This kind of living conditions are inhumane and with this project we seek to restore the dignity of our people by building 2000 (200 in each of the 10 constituencies) dry-pit sanitary solutions in the City of Windhoek.
